It wears one of the best versions of Lexus' corporate spindle grille that helps the front be a standout, even if the relatively plain exterior is somewhat anonymous. Yeah, they're that tight and that good.
For sharper agility with a standard-length model, the F Sport package adds a sport-tuned adaptive air suspension, Brembo brakes, an Alcantara headliner, aluminum interior trim, a black-surround grille, round foglamps, and paddle shifters. Steering wheel buttons provide quick, easy access to frequently used functions in the audio systems. This year, the big Lexus sheds its hybrid powertrain in favor of three models that offer a small spin on the familiar formula. If you want to make your back-seat passengers feel extra special, opt for the Ultra Luxury package with 4-zone climate control, power sunshades, rear climate and audio controls, and power-adjustable massaging seats. Base cars aren't exactly spartan, though. That's just fine, according to us; we'd rather be coddled in the big Lexus than sloshed around in the spacious confines. Both front seats feature a standard heating and cooling system with large heating and cooling areas for reduced heating and cooling times.
Options, unfortunately, are lumped into expensive packages. Most buyers will choose the base sedan, but Lexus also offers the more aggressive F Sport package with 19-inch wheels, a revised suspension, and larger brakes. It's still an elegant shape, even without much definition, although we're not as sold on the chunky interior layout and long horizontal lines. They had a wide selection of cars, and although they're a bit space-confined, they had no trouble making any of their vehicles available for a test drive upon request. Stepping up to the long-wheelbase version unlocks a few upgrades, including an executive-class seating arrangement that adds a ottoman-style footrests, as well as power-adjusting heating and cooled rear seats.
It's a subtle approach and it's one that works relatively well. Optional safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, rear-seat side airbags, a pre-collision safety system, and a driver-attention monitor. It also has a haptic-feedback steering wheel, which will vibrate when you have safety alerts. For demanding audiophiles we recommend the 19-speaker Mark Levinson Reference Surround Sound system. The 2017 version is more of the same, with few creases running along the doors to break up its big body. Take a look for yourself.
